Proposition 64 Legalizes Recreational Cannabis Use
Yesterday, Californians voted to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. By approving Proposition 64, California became the most populous state in the U.S. to pass such a law. After narrowly rejecting a similar measure six years ago, Californians voted to end marijuana prohibition. According to Nate Bradley, executive director of the California Cannabis Industry Association, “Proposition 64 will allow California to take its rightful place as the center of cannabis innovation, research and development.”

With the passage of this law, Californians who are at least 21 or older are now allowed to possess, transport, buy, and use up to one ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes. Individuals are also allowed to grow as many as six plants for their own personal use. Until yesterday, only those who were issued a medical marijuana prescription could legally possess and consume cannabis in the state; now, state-licensed businesses have been allowed to engage in the retail sale of marijuana.
