James S. Margulis is licensed in Colorado, Florida and Missouri and has
over 17 years of experience in Family Law and Commercial Law.
Jim grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and attended the prestigious St. Louis
Country Day School. He took his undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist
University in Dallas, Texas, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political
Science and a minor degree in History.
After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 1990, Jim became
involved in the political arena, successfully managing two campaigns in
St. Louis County for the Prosecuting Attorney of St. Louis County. Jim
then took his political skills to the nation's capital working for
Congresswoman Joan Kelly Horn as her direct media director and her legislative
assistant on judicial affairs.
Jim then returned to St. Louis and attended Washington University School of Law.
After graduating in 1998, he moved to Florida and worked exclusively in
Family Law for four years.
Jim's family law practice consists of protections orders, paternity
actions, enforcement actions, modification actions and simple to very
complex dissolutions. Jim's experience encompasses contested complex
financial cases (utilizing forensic accountants) and complex custody matters
(including national and international relocation cases). These complex
financial issues encompass business valuations, asset distributions and
income analysis (including marijuana businesses). These complex custody
matters encompass the full range of parental and children issues (including
marijuana and alcohol issues). Further, Jim's experience includes
the entire spectrum of family law litigation including, but not limited
to, initial client meetings, all discovery compliance and execution, temporary
orders hearings, expert witness utilization and permanent orders hearings.
In 2003, Jim returned home to St. Louis, where he continued his family
law practice but also expanded into commercial litigation matters.
Jim's commercial litigation practice consists of business litigation,
real estate litigation, construction law litigation and other complex
civil litigation. Jim's practice consists of all aspects of complex
civil litigation including, but not limited to, client meetings and exploration
and development of litigation/settlement strategy, written discovery,
motion practice, deposition of lay and expert witnesses, pretrial procedures,
preparation of legal memorandums and trial briefs, voir dire and all aspects
of trial counsel.
In 2009, Jim re-located to Boulder, Colorado, and continued to focus his
practice on family law matters and commercial law matters.
Jim's practice also includes a significant focus on all aspects of
mediation and arbitration and he remains in the forefront of the utilization
of alternative dispute resolution techniques to resolve disputes before
resorting to costly and lengthy litigation. What sets Jim apart from other
lawyers is his unique expertise in the areas of family law and commercial
law combined with practical solutions to legal problems that apply the
right combination of creativity, legal and industrial knowledge, innovation,
